The Barrels,St Owen Street, Hereford
Saturday 12th February 2005

It was 9pm on Saturday 12th February 2005, The Barrels, St Owen Street in Hereford was heaving with expectation as Ray opened the gig with Howlin’ Wolf’s Forty–Four. As far as one man blues bands go even Dr Isaiah Ross would have been impressed, God knows I certainly was. What followed was exceptional:-

Ground Hog Blues - John Lee Hooker style.

Mississippi Fred McDowell:
    Diving Duck Blues
    Highway 61
    Shake ‘Em On Down

Crossroads – Robert Johnson

My Babe – Little Walter

All interspersed with work from Bo Carter, Leadbelly and Dr Isaiah Ross.

Packed like the proverbially sardines Ray seemed oblivious of the crowd as his feet worked like pistons producing a mix of sound consistent with a trio. Afterwards Pete Clinton (Hereford Blues Promoter) produced an L.P. of Sonny Boy Williamson with The Yardbirds which provoked Ray to admit he had played sonny’s harp – the one Perry Foster lent Him!

See Photo below, Pete, Ray and my good-self.
