Here is the
UK
and European Blues Festivals Guide 2020,
including blues related workshops, exhibitions and lectures.
At this time some festivals
still show 2019 or are shown as "2020
- TBA" (awaiting details from the organisers). At least you can see roughly when
they will take place (most festivals are at the same time of year within
a week or so). Whilst I have taken every care to ensure details are
correct, please confirm dates with festival organisers - I have included contact
phone numbers, email addresses and website addresses. Please let me know
of any other UK or European blues festivals, workshops, exhibitions and lectures not listed here.
I regularly
update this list as I receive more details from festival organisers,
so
please check back often.
COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
Please refer to individual
festival websites for the latest situation regarding any cancellations.
A note from the UKBlues
Federation:
At this time of gigs,
festivals, jam sessions and other events being subject to widespread
cancellation, we urge everybody to remember that whilst you, as a
punter, may lose out on your tickets and your opportunity to attend an
event, the musicians who were taking part in that event will be losing
out on what they would have earned, often having already incurred
non-recoverable costs, whilst the venues will still have their normal
costs – staff, rates, insurance, rent etc. to cover with little or no
income.
Please do your best to support those whose livelihoods are now under
threat by buying acts’ merchandise and, maybe, not seeking a refund for
your tickets. It is essential that now, more than ever, we all try to
look out for others.
Thanks, Alan White.

Parliamentary Jazz Awards for Best Newcomer:
singer Luca Manning.
There are newly recorded live sets from Tom

special mixtape featuring artists who have
played the Edinburgh International Jazz & Blues
Festival, including EJF archive concert
performances by Dave Milligan, Haftor Medboe &

Latest Update: 13/03/20
Thanks For The Applications
Last month we launched our ‘Under The Radar’
project, in association with the UK Blues
Federation.
The team of judges, made up of industry
professionals - including radio presenters,
promoters and festival organisers -
were seeking blues-based acts with
originality (no ‘covers’ bands!),
creativity, technical ability, musical
compatibility to the festival, and
entertainment value, being at the core of
their choices.
The project proved to
be immensely popular, with over 130
applications and outstanding quality in
terms of musicianship.
The judges now have the difficult task of
choosing two acts/bands to play this
summer's main stages. The chosen acts will
be announced in due course.

Pete Marsh – Festival Artist In Residence
- Returns For 2020
Following the hugely successful ‘Pop Up
Gallery’ at the 2019 festival, Pete will
return for the 2020 festival to showcase his
unique style of capturing artists live on
stage. Pete will exhibit a selection
of artworks captured during the 2019 blues
festival in Colne. Artist browsers will form
part of the exhibit, allowing music lovers
to view many lino cuts and artworks of
Pete’s ‘live’ work. The exhibition
will be in place in the Muni venue for the
duration of the 2020 festival.

Women In Blues
We took the opportunity to use
International Women’s Day last weekend to
celebrate women’s achievements in music… and
to enjoy a huge ‘cheers’ to all the
incredible female talent we have lined up as
part of our festival this August.
Paddy Maguire, festival artist coordinator,
commented “We’re extremely proud of our line
up and of the huge array of female talent
which will grace our stages this year.”
Artists include - Kyla Brox, Layla Zoe, Ma
Bessie and many more.
Celebrating Women In
Blues
Previous Udate:
The UKBlues Federation has teamed up with
The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival in
Colne to offer up-and-coming,
under-the-radar acts (solo artists or bands)
the opportunity to play the main stages at
the festival this summer.
Apply to play via the festival website.
Deadline for applications is Saturday 29th
February: Apply
to Play.
As part of the process, applicants are asked
to submit a link to a sound recording, along
with a link to a video of their act
performing live. Applications will be
perused by a panel of music professionals,
who will use the submitted sound recordings
and videos to select a shortlist. A mix of
award-winning musicians, recording artists,
event managers, radio presenters and more,
make up the judging panel.
Two bands/artists will be chosen to each
play a one hour slot. The judges are seeking
blues-based acts with originality (no
'covers' bands please), creativity,
technical ability, musical compatibility to
the festival, and entertainment value, being
at the core of their choices. The acts must
not have played the festival within the last
3 years. The bands must make their own way
to and from the festival. The available
musical slots will be paid, as will
accommodation.
In addition to a slot at The Great British
Rhythm & Blues Festival, one of the chosen
acts will be nominated to be part of the
UKBlues Challenge 2020.
Steve Potter from the UKBlues Federation
explains further. "Keeping the blues
genre alive and fresh is a huge part of what
our federation strives to do. Discovering
up-and-coming artists and showcasing them in
a vibrant, upbeat, busy environment, such as
at The Great British Rhythm & Blues
Festival, has a significant impact on both
the musicians and the musical genre as a
whole. We're thrilled to be involved in
helping to bring forward new music to the
scene, and supporting the music and
musicians in any way we can."
And there's more...
In addition to a slot at The Great British
Rhythm & Blues Festival, one of the chosen
festival acts will be nominated to take part
in the 2020 UKBlues Challenge, organised by
the UKBlues Federation. The winner of the
2020 UKBlues Challenge will be invited to
represent the UK at the 37th International
Blues Challenge in Memphis in January 2021
and the 11th European Blues Challenge in
Chorzow, Poland in April 2021.
Five acts will take part in the 2020 UKBlues
Challenge, four of whom will have been
selected under a process run by the UKBlues
Federation, with the fifth being selected
from those acts appearing at the Great
British Rhythm & Blues Festival under
the project's banner.
Ashwyn Smyth, Chair of the UK Blues
Federation said "Each year, the UKBlues
Challenge contestants are very varied,
creating differing blues soundscapes from
across the genre and demonstrating the fact
that blues is a 'broad church'. I am looking
forward to seeing who the judges choose as
the winner. I know it won't be an easy
choice. I am immensely proud that since we
took on responsibility for selecting the
UK’s representatives at the International
and European Blues Challenges, we have twice
reached the semi-finals in Memphis and twice
won the European Blues Challenge. As is
clear from the quotes below, participating
in the UKBlues Challenge really raises
profiles and brings acts to a much wider
audience."
Quotes from previous UKBlues Challenge
artists:
"Being selected to take part in the
UKBlues Challenge is first and foremost an
honour, we were humbled to be asked. If you
happen to 'win' as we did it, becomes a
delicious opportunity to reach a wider
audience, giving us even more cause to feel
really positive about the music we make -
all the while backed by the very supportive
UKBlues Federation. Get stuck in, it's
totally worth it."
The Achievers - UKBlues Challenge Winners
2019
"It’s impossible to say how much
taking part in the UKBlues Challenge has
propelled our career and contributed to such
a successful time for us. It has helped us
to bring our music to new audiences, gaining
new fans and gigging opportunities across
the UK... and worldwide. I can’t thank the
UKBlues Federation enough for all the work
they put into the challenges and for keeping
UKBlues scene alive and kicking."
Kyla Brox - UKBlues Challenge Winner
2018
"The UKBlues Challenge was a great
opportunity for us to play some fantastic
venues with some amazing bands. To think
this little band from the Essex Delta would
play on Beale Street is a dream come true!"
La Vendore Rogue - UKBlues Challenge
Winners 2017
"Winning the European Blues Challenge in 2017
gave me the opportunity to explore my career

JULY 4 2020
In all these
years AmenoBlues has tried to keep the Festival alive,
offering a high quality billboard and bringing
internationally-known artists at a price accessible to
everyone to a small village, peripheral to the major
cultural circuits.
Despite the
efforts put in place, the niche music genre and the few
resources available, unfortunately, do not allow us to
maintain that economic balance that would have allowed
us to continue with serenity.
We therefore
wish to share a special evening of greeting with our
loyal public, which will be the last occasion to enjoy
the atmosphere of the square in Ameno. The event will
take place on Saturday 4th July and that evening we will
try to bring some of the musicians who have
characterized the magnificent evenings of past editions
to the stage, in a sort of small The Last Waltz.
Amenoblues
will continue to organize concerts at the Tornielli
Museum, always guaranteeing a high level of musical
proposals.
We thank all
the fans who have followed us with affection in recent
years, we invite you to follow the website and the
facebook page to find out the next events. |

After nine
years, the time has come to put the Big Green Cardigan

never covered its cost and as much as we love it,
financially we cannot carry on. It’s been a marvellous
adventure making friends and discovering some great
acts together but now it is time to move on to new
things. We would like to thank everyone who has helped

you go away with some dashingly good memories.

Due
to the Coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Carlisle
Blues/Rock Festival has been POSTPONED
New
dates 8-10th October 2021
By now it
probably won’t come as much of a shock to anyone that
this year’s festival on 2-4 October has had to be
postponed.
This decision
to postpone the event was entirely down the situation we
find ourselves in with the Coronavirus. The actual
decision was left as long as possible in the hope that
the rate of change from lockdown restrictions, once the
virus was under control, would be rapid. Sadly, that
hasn’t been the case nor does it seem likely to be in
the near future; even now, some months down the line the
victim rates in England are still quite shocking.
Many experts
are predicting a second wave and another lock down so
that eventuality also had to be taken into account.
Who can
possibly predict, given the rate of success in managing
the virus in this country so far, where we will be in a
few weeks time?
In reality
with only some 12/13 weeks to go to the festival date,
social gatherings are still prohibited and there has
been nothing from the Government (latest PM announcement
23/06/20) to suggest that that will change any time
soon. The lack of Government guidance for future
gatherings makes it virtually impossible to plan the
management of an indoor event whilst ensuring people’s
safety and keeping within the festival’s financial
constraints.
Even if
indoor gatherings happen to be given the go ahead in the
next few weeks it is highly likely that they will be
restricted by social distancing measures which will
inevitably restrict venue/room capacities.
Unfortunately, any form of social distancing restriction
on capacity would mean it simply wouldn’t be possible to
run this particular festival whilst ensuring everyone’s
safety and without suffering considerable financial
loss.
Events like
this are time consuming and a lot of work has already
gone into this festival, not to mention expense; but
that’s resigned to history now. Hopefully by postponing
until 8-10th October next year, a good deal of the
organisation for this year can be replicated for next,
and not be totally wasted.
Where
possible it will be arranged for the same bands/acts to
play on the same days on the new dates i.e. a band
scheduled to play on Friday this year will instead play
on Friday on the re-arranged weekend; indeed, most acts
have already indicated that they will be available and
able to comply with that arrangement.
Hopefully by
October next year the world will be back to normal and
we will have a full weekend of top-class music to look
forward to; the wait should even make it that extra bit
special. Who knows, there may even be a surprise or two
into the bargain by then!
Ticket holder
Information
All tickets
already purchased will be automatically validated for
the new dates in October 2021. The codes on all tickets
will remain valid for the re-scheduled event. There is
no need for ticket holders to actually do anything other
than keep the tickets safe and remember where they are
stored.
Package Deals
– All tickets and existing hotel arrangements will be
automatically transferred to the new dates in 2021. Once
again there will be nothing more for the ticket holders
to do other than keep the Ticket Confirmation Form safe
and remember where it is stored.
It is hoped
that all ticket holders will be able to make the
re-arranged festival date but should the new dates
present a difficulty or impose financial hardship,
refunds will be available.
The preferable method of contact
for refunds would be email: carlislebluesfest@btinternet.com or
alternatively call Nick on 07725 801582 / 01228 409795.
Regrettably refunds cannot be made to credit or debit
cards, only bank transfer or payment by cheque will be
available.
The festival
looks forward to your continued support, it will be
invaluable to this event in the future.

Nick

article in 'The Cumberland News' :
Here's
the text version:
The popular
Carlisle Blues Rock Festival has been saved after
businesses came forward to sponsor it for 2020.
This year the
popular three-day event was expected to be the last,
with no plans to continue. But businesses have come
together to rescue the festival which will prevent it
becoming another festival closure statistic and loss of
live music.
Director/Organiser Nick Westgarth said that he is
extremely grateful to all of the companies who have
stepped forward to help. Steve Potter of Form FitOut
and Charles Scott from MacBeth Scott, both of whom also
sponsored the 2019 event, have been joined by KNS
Automotive of Peterlee and Annandale Distillery of Annan
who have added their support for 2020. Together those
businesses have ensured that the festival has a future
in 2020.
The popular festival, nominated
for best festival in
The UK Blues Awards, closed
after the 2019 event in September with no plans to
continue.
Organiser
Nick said that the event can no longer run without
funding or sponsorship: “It used to be totally
self-financing but sadly that’s no longer the case. When
the festival closed at the end of September it had no
future, financially it was finished.”
The smaller
venue and ever-increasing costs meant it had become
impossible to stage the event without financial support.
“The only way
to keep it self-financing would be to lower the profile
of the bands or raise the ticket prices substantially,
neither of which I feel would be good for the future of
the festival,“ He added.
The companies
which have stepped forward to help are not local but
have people within their organisations who are keen
supporters of live music.
Steve Potter of
Form FitOut, a Rochester
company, is an active board member of the
UK Blues Federation while
Charles Scott of
MacBeth Scott & Co in Kendal
is a keen music lover and a supporter of numerous
Cumbrian events.
John Robson of
KNS Automotive and two friends
were in the audience in September and came forward
immediately after the festival with an offer of help.
“They had
enjoyed the event so much they didn’t want to see the
festival to close for financial reasons,” said Nick.
The most recent acquisition is the
prestigious award-winning
Annandale Distillery which has
a distillery and cafe just north of the Scottish Border
in Annan. The distillery, with their international
award-winning whisky is keen to associate with the
festival, which enjoys an international reputation.
The festival
has a reputation for the quality of the bands it brings
to Carlisle. “I am confident I will be able to pull a
top-class line-up together for 2020. Call it twenty,
twenty vision if you wish,” Nick added with a wry smile.
The 2020
event will take place from 2nd to 4th October at the
Crown & Mitre Hotel in Carlisle.

3rd to
6th December 2020
Edinburgh Jazz & Blue Festival present an online
weekend celebration of Scottish jazz and blues.
This December, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival
presents a weekend featuring some of the best
musicians on the Scottish jazz and blues scene.
Taking place from third to the sixth of
December, the Scottish Jazz & Blues Weekend
brings four exclusive gigs online.
This the festival’s first foray into
pay-per-view with each concert costing £10.
Every session fuses high quality artistic
programming with top notch production values,
recorded by a team of expert videographers and
sound engineers, following social distancing
measures at all times.
Starting on Thursday at 8pm, is a double bill
featuring some giants of the Scottish blues
scene – Jed Potts & The Hillman Hunters perform
‘Live at the Car Cave’ with new music recorded
in lockdown, and heavyweight blues rock star
Alan Nimmo, the powerhouse singer and guitarist
behind King King joins Gerry Jablonski and the
Electric Band for the first time!
On Friday at 8pm, some of the best musicians
coming out of Scotland's vibrant jazz scene
present an exciting double bill. Known for their
unique brand of jazz fusion, Mezcla’s set
includes music from their debut album ‘Shoot the
Moon’ - longlisted for the Scottish Album of the
Year Award - as well as some new tracks written
in lockdown. Led by saxophonist Harry Weir, Blue
Boar Brass are a brand-new brass band with a
twist - a dynamic quintet playing with huge
drive and attack.
On Saturday night at 8pm, sees a double bill
from two bands who excel at fusing modern jazz
and folk. David Milligan recently released his
new album ‘Momento’ to huge acclaim, and he
performs it live for the first time, exclusively
for EJBF. His trio will be followed by Stephen
Henderson’s Modern Vikings. Drummer Henderson
leads an all-star line up of Konrad Wiszniewski,
Fergus McCreadie, David Bowden and Graeme
Stephen in an exciting set inspired by Scottish
and Scandinavian folk music.
Rounding off the winter weekend on Sunday at 6pm
are two fantastic Scottish musicians paying
homage to two of the greatest jazz legends of
the 20th Century. Colin Steele & Brian Kellock
perform the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke
Ellington in a special intimate performance
recorded just for EJBF at Edinburgh’s EP54.
Tickets on sale at
https://edinburghjazzfestival.com/
Fans of vocal jazz should look out for a further
announcement in the coming weeks…
Chair of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues
Festival, Councillor Jason Rust says: “Since our
online festival in July, the EJBF team have been
working hard incredibly hard to get back to what
we do best – presenting professional gigs with
the outstanding musicians that our audiences
love. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to work
with a team of exceptional videographers and
sound engineers to bring you four incredible
gigs, all recorded just for EJBF audiences, and
I hope you enjoy watching along with us.”
