Sunday saw Watermelon Slim refused entry to our
country because of Immigration Laws (Should he have claimed asylum?).
And so the star of the afternoon was not to be. Which brought about an
extended set from Peter Green, He can still play, his voice isn't so
strong and he managed the harp. Though showing some lapses of
concentration he was so much better than with the Splinter group. The
crowd were brought to a crescendo when The Green Manalishi ensued
bringing everyone to their feet and there they stayed till the end and
through an encore. Peter Green is back with a mix of the old, the new
and a lot of traditional blues. Oh yes, he still does Albatross much to
the crowd's delight!
A real treat was to follow, Mike Sanchez filled in more of Watermelon
Slim's lost time, and with the most respect to Mike I have never really
been enthused with his "Swing" thing but after this solo act I am most
impressed. He played Boogie Woogie Piano, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little
Richard, The Big Bopper - A most wonderful version of TE-NI-NEE-NI-NU. Joined on
stage by The Seatsniffers for one more number before taking a well
earned rest. I have to say at this time there was more dancing going on
than at any other time in the festival. Such is the power of "Rock N
Roll". As for The Seatsniffers, what a great act, they continued in the
same vein up-tempo "R-n-B" and the dancing carried on. Mike rejoined
them for a further set and carried on where he left off. Ruby Turner
finished the evening with a masterful Soul session.
