The surprise of the day and a
fish out of water, or as he said a cheese at a cholesterol convention,
Dennis Locorriere
the former Dr Hook singer. Dennis said that he was surprised to be
booked at a blues festival, but in true professional manner he delivered
the goods and held the audience for all of his one hour set. Dennis
accompanying himself on guitar performed a range of songs from his solo
career and of his time with Dr Hook. He related how good it was to work
with the great song writer Shel Silverstein. Songs included “Unchain My
Heart”, “Freakers Ball”, “The Right To Walk Away”, “My Lazy Day” a song
about whinging, “Penicillin Penny” including the riff from “Norwegian
Wood”, “Yesterdays Blues” and a song written for his son “Shine Son”. Dr
Hook songs featured were “I’ve Got A Couple More Years Baby”, “Lucy
Gordon” and “Queen Of The Silver Dollar”. The deserved encore consisted
of two Dr Hook songs “Cover Of The Rolling Stone” and the one everyone
was waiting for “Sylvia’s Mother”.
The festival was closed by
the UK’s own Mike Sanchez and His Band
featuring Mike on piano supported by guitar, bass, drums and a horn
section. The band delivered a great set of rhythm and blues, rock’n’roll
and good time boogie. Material was from a broad church of R&B related
music ranging from Fats Domino, Nappy Brown, Slim Harpo, Jerry Lee Lewis
and Howlin' Wolf. Songs included “Monday Morning”, “What’s In Your
Frying Pan”, “Come On”, “The Symphonia B”, “Down The Road Apiece”,
“Ready Willing And Able”, “I’m A Coal Miner”, “Everybody’s Got A Buick”,
“Hip Shaking Baby”, “Brown Eyed Handsome Man”, “How Many More Years”, “
The Wild One” and “Yamma, Yamma Pretty Mamma”. The show finished with an
encore which included “Tallahassee Lassie”. It was good to have a
closing performance which didn’t feature overly long guitar solos which
seemed to dominate most of the festival on Saturday.
All in all this year’s line
up was not as strong as previous festivals, however the Sunday session
lifted the festival which up to then had been very mediocre. Attendance
at the Marquee was greatly reduced from previous years mainly due to the
lesser line up.
