Here is the
UK
and European Blues Festivals Guide 2014,
including blues related workshops, exhibitions and lectures.
I'm waiting for details of many festivals throughout the year (shown as "2014
- TBA"). Whilst I have taken every care to ensure details are
correct, please confirm dates with festival organisers - I have included contact
phone numbers, email addresses and website addresses. Please let me know
of any other UK or European blues festivals, workshops, exhibitions and lectures not listed here.
I regularly
update this list as I receive more details from festival organisers,
so
please check back often.
Thanks, Alan White.

Lymm Festival Winter Warmers Blues Night

special guests
The Blues Duo
Doors open at 7:30pm
for 8pm start
Lymm Golf Club,
Whitbarrow Road, Lymm WA13 9AN
£11
Bar facilities
available (not included in ticket price)
Wheelchair
accessible
Little Jo and the
Misfits were a huge hit at
the Landing Stage (the British Legion) during this summer's
Lymm Fest, and we are pleased to welcome them back for their
first full appearance at the Winter Warmer Blues Night. The
band provide a fabulous mix of Swing, Rockabilly and Rhythm
and Blues which is sure to fill the dance floor.
Special guests
The Blues Duo may be a small outfit but between them
they create a wall of pure Chicago Blues. With Tommy Allen
on vocals, guitar and foot percussion and Johnny Hewitt
vocals and harmonica, they have enough raw energy to capture
audiences and take you back to the time of 1950’s Chicago
Blues. Watch out for the band and the Blues Duo jamming
together during the evening to provide us with something
extra special by way of swing and blues.
This is certain to
be one of the best events on the calendar and is bound to
sell out, so make sure you get your tickets soon, either
online at
www.lymmfestival.org.uk
or locally at Lymm Electric and Rushgreen Motors.

"This is NOT
"Rhythm Festival 2014". It's simply a
get-together in a small but well-equipped music
venue in Hertford, combined with a real ale
festival and some great bands. There's just be
one stage and our friend
Deejay Wheelie-Bag
will entertain during the breaks in the
show. The line-up is not yet complete and other
Rhythm Festival favourites will be announced
over the coming weeks.
The venue isn't
huge and so we can only accommodate 250
ticket-buyers. We're expecting demand to be
high". |

In
just over a week's time, we are very proud to be
hosting the fourth annual Hebden Bridge Blues
Festival.
This is our biggest ever event with 52 acts
performing throughout the town and it is a great
credit to the many people who have worked on the
HBBF project, not least the musicians and the
volunteers, that it has grown so quickly.
Since putting on our first one in 2011, we have
been awarded the British Blues Awards "Festival
of the Year" in both 2012 and 2013, which came
as a total shock to us as our original intention
was just to put on a few bands for our own
enjoyment.
There are around 40 Blues festivals of varying
sizes each year in Britain so for us to have got
to this level so quickly, without a penny of
public funding too, shows us that many other
people wanted something different as well.
Those of you who know us personally, know we're
not comfortable with being part of the
'establishment' - we like to keep things fresh
and exciting for us and 4 years is a long time
for either of us to stay focused on a single
project. This particular one has taken up a huge
amount of time and energy and has outgrown our
small town so quickly!
With this in mind, we're going out with a bang
and this will be the last ever Hebden Bridge
Blues Festival, so if you've never joined us
before and would like to see what everyone has
been talking about, this is your last chance.
Both of us, separately and together, will
continue to be involved with various other music
projects, so we won't disappear entirely, but we
just feel that this particular event has run its
course for us personally.
We'd love to see you next weekend for the Hebden
finale, so we've issued some additional tickets
to help that happen. You can get yours, and your
slice of British Blues history, by going to
www.hebdenblues.co.uk
Thank you for all your support on our amazing
journey.

New
Blues ’n’ Roots Festival
Church Stretton
Shropshire
The
sleepy town of Church Stretton in Shropshire is
getting a new addition to the festival calendar.
The first ever Blues 'n' Roots Festival will be
held in the town on Saturday 31st May 2014. The
festival, which will be supporting MacMillan
Cancer Support, aims to showcase some of the
best singer-song writers on the blues and roots
scene. The line-up features both national and
international artists, as well as some fantastic
homegrown Shropshire talent.
Headlining the festival is ‘Blues Boy’ Dan
Owen, winner of the British Blues Awards
Best Young Artist 2013. Dan is a Shropshire lad,
who is making huge waves in the music world.
Gary Hall, influential Americana musician
and former front man with The Stormkeepers, will
be joining Dan Owen on the bill.
Polly Money is another artist on the rise.
Polly has spent the last year touring and
playing festivals all over the UK, Europe and

LymmFest
Saturday 21st June 2014
After last year's
success the LymmFest returns with an even
bigger line-up for 2014. This year the event is
taking place on Saturday 21st June at five
venues across the village with the biggest
single line up of bands and artists that the
festival has ever featured on a single night!
Watch out in
particular for local blues singer
Makuini,
with the Hoo Doo Men
who are playing
at the
festival for the first time as part of their
current UK tour. Or why not try the sounds of
Heavy Soul
who feature some of
the very best musicians that Liverpool has to
offer. And the really good news is that festival
favourites
Little Jo and the Misfits
will be back at the
LymmFest after their brilliant
performance last summer. Black Sheep and
Friends will be performing this evening.
Also watch out for
some of the very best acoustic talent that the
region has to offer including
Little Rach
Jon Brindley
and
the
Gary Edwards Jones Band.
This promises to be a night to remember! |

16th Big Wheel Blues Festival 2014
Isle of Man
"Circumstances have dictated some changes to the traditional
arrangements for next year’s Big Wheel Blues Festival. The
Laxey Pavilion remains without a tenant, and with no
definite timescales for when this will change, the Committee
have had to seek an alternative venue again. Luckily our
friends at the Villa have agreed to accommodate the Festival
in the Promenade Suite, the Colonnade Suite and the Gardens,
in a repeat of our successful 2013 sell out event. The usual
early May weekend was unavailable, so the Festival is for
2014 moving to Friday the 20th, Saturday the 21st and Sunday
the 22nd of June.
As before there will be ticketed evening concerts with three
off-Island acts on Friday and Saturday, with two free stages
of local talent on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The
Committee are in negotiations with artists for the evening
gigs, and will provide full information in the New Year".

Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival
Burton Agnes Hall
Burton Agnes
East Yorkshire
YO25 4NB
The 2014 Burton
Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival takes place from Friday 27th
June to Sunday 29th June. Surrounded by the beautiful
Yorkshire Wolds, the Festival is set in the award winning
grounds and Great Hall of this Elizabethan stately home.
This year's line
up includes Chantel McGregor, British Blues Award's
guitarist of the year AND female vocalist of the year 2013;
the legendary jump, jive, swing, rhythm and blues of King
Biscuit and the Pleasure Boys; New-Orleans-Bourbon-bar
sultry vocals and boogie piano of Tipitina; festival band
favourites, gospel tinged Polly and the Billets Doux. And if
that isn't varied enough, we have master-saxophonist Alan
Barnes, teaming up with Horace Silver experts The Give a
Little Love Orchestra for 'Watching the Detectives': music
that celebrates Sherlock Holmes and Columbo!
Click here for the full lineup
As always, bands
overflow from the outdoor main stage into the Great Hall,
our shops and cafe courtyard, and the late night sessions in
our bar tent. Delicious food is prepared by our catering
team, ranging from homemade burgers to spicy curries, ice
creams from our vintage ice cream van, and bakes and
cupcakes in our tea tent. Local, award winning Wold Top
beers will be on tap, brewed just a few miles away and
delivered by brewer and jazz fan Tom Mellor, who then picks
up his guitar to play in the Hall.
There is camping in the beautiful surroundings of the
adjacent Park Field, with hot showers laid on. The child in
all of us is taken care of by balloon artistry and face
painting, and highlights of Burton Agnes' grounds include a
maze, giant games, jungle garden and woodland walk with
forest creatures to find.
The Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival is proud to be an
official fringe event of Le Tour de France's visit to
Yorkshire. We will salute the arrival of the Tour de
France's 'Le Grand Depart' in Yorkshire with 'Le Mini
Depart'. Taking place alongside the Burton Agnes Jazz &
Blues Festival, there will be time-trialled clown bike and
toddler races on 'Le Mini Course'; a celebration of French
cuisine on the food lawn; and the hothouse gypsy-jazz music
of France's most famous jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt,
performed on stage by Djangologie.

"Norfolk Blues society
is organising a three day blues festival first for Norfolk, with bands
playing simultaneously at eight venues in the centre of Dereham, all
within walking distance of each other. A chance to see a whole 'mess o
blues' from Mississippi swamp through R&B, Chicago blues of Buddy Guy,
Muddy Waters to Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan right up to funky,
verging on jazz. This not to be missed event of 2013 for all live blues
fans is organised by Norfolk Blues Society. Most venues are free to
enter other than for the headline artists, Ron Sayer and Dave Thomas who
recently played with Paul Jones at the Maddermarket". |

The Chester and Southport Blues Festivals bring
together some truly exciting acts from around the world,
all of which have been carefully picked and represent
some incredible musical talent. Not only does this
festival provide a plethora of bands and artists, but at
just £27 it is also one of the best value musical events
you are likely to attend all summer. Check our profiles
below of just some of the acts set to play at Chester
Blues, Rhythm & Rock Festival.
Steve Cropper
Steve Cropper is an American guitarist, songwriter and
record producer. He is probably best known as the
guitarist of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, an instrumental R &
B/funk band very influential in 60’s & 70’s in shaping
the sound of Southern Blues and Memphis soul. Booker T.
& the M.G.’s were one of the most prolific, respected,
and imitated of their era, releasing numerous albums and
singles and achieving a number 1 in the States with
“Green Onions” and the magic sound of “Time is Tight”
that got to number 4 in the UK charts.
Steve later gained fame as a member of the Blues Brother
band and was part of the primary band which backed up
the Blues Brothers, in 1980 the hit feature film and
cult classic The Blues Brothers. His musical talents
were well known outside of the USA; The Beatles favoured
his playing, and his production on Otis Redding records
and John Lennon and Paul McCartney made tentative plans
to record in Memphis, and to work with him. However
Brian Epstein cancelled the sessions, citing security
problems!
In 1992, Booker T. & the M.G.’s were inducted into the
rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Mojo ranks, Steve as “the
second-best guitarist ever” and in 1996 the magazine
named him “the greatest living guitar player”! When
asked what he thought of Cropper, the infamous Keith
Richards said, “Perfect, man.”
On 9 June 2005, he was inducted into the Songwriters
Hall of Fame and on 17 October 2010, this honour was
extended to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame!
In 2013 he was a special guest at selected concerts as
part of Peter Frampton’s Guitar Circus Tour and is still
wowing audiences wherever he plays!
Animals and Friends
Remain a seminal rhythm & blues band who still command
great respect internationally amongst their peers as
well as from fans of all ages!
Billy Walton Band
After spending years honing their craft it becomes
impossible for their unique style and personality to be
held back...such is the case with Billy Walton!
The Hitman Blues Band
Accompanied by the New York City Horns, this is the type
of music that will captivate and keep you thrilled from
start to finish!
Mākuini
It’s not only her remarkable voice but her drive and
personality that have made Mākuini one of New Zealand’s
best loved singers around the world today!
Lucy Zirins
Combining a mix of blues, soul, folk and gospel numbers
in her set and increasingly performing original
material, Lucy is fast making a name for herself!
The Hexmen
Blues based certainly but the defining quality of the
Hexmen has always been energy with an aggressive, indie
edge and a psychedelic undercurrent that lends extra
dimensions to the music.
With a truly International flavour and artists of this

Carlisle Blues & Rock
Festival, News Update
Carlisle Blues and Rock
Festival, which will be held from 7th to 9th
November, is the festival that the top blues musicians
love to play, the one they all talk about, the one that
brings out the best in them. And organiser Nick
Westgarth has really excelled himself this year, with an
incredible five-star line-up – including most of the
top names on the current British blues circuit, along
with a selection of the highest-quality acts from
further afield.
Nick had a stressful time
recently, with the sudden closure of the festival’s
usual home, the Swallow Hilltop Hotel but, as he says,
‘Out of every crisis comes opportunity.’ He is convinced
that this will actually mark the start of a new and
exciting era for the festival. The event will now move
right into the heart of Carlisle.
Nick says:
Within 72 hours, I
managed to secure a bigger, better music venue, one that
is built for live music, with a fantastic stage and
bars. It's actually named “The Venue” (www.thevenuecarlisle.co.uk),
located just off Carlisle city centre, with ample
parking and 5 minutes’ walk from the train station. And
the team at The Venue are pulling out all the stops to
help me ensure that we will have a great festival with
the 19 top-class acts (no fill-in bands at this one!!)
confirmed for the three days over the early November
weekend. As they say, “Every cloud has a silver lining!”
The many festival goers
who had already booked accommodation at the Hilltop will
be accommodated in some of Carlisle’s most prestigious
hotels, including The Crown and Mitre, and The Hallmark,
all within easy walking distance of The Venue.
Ticket purchases can
still be made very simply via the festival website:
http://www.carlislebluesfestival.com/
Nick advises music-lovers
to waste no time booking their tickets as all this
activity has sparked a lot of interest, and they are
being snapped up quickly and this festival regularly
sells out. They are amazing value at only £31 for Friday
and Sunday single-day tickets, £46.50 for Saturday, and
£99.50 for the full weekend.
Full details of the acts
are available below or on the festival website but these
are a few of the highlights.
FRIDAY
will be USA day with special guests MIKE ZITO & THE
WHEEL and SAMANTHA FISH, with MARCUS MALONE (originally
from Detroit) making a welcome return. Mike and Samantha
are certainly creating a buzz on the global blues scene,
and many people will be excited to see them in action.
SATURDAY will
be a celebration of British Blues, including some
musicians who have been at the top of the game for
years, and others who are relatively new - from THE
CLIMAX BLUES BAND and BLUES’N’TROUBLE to CONNIE LUSH and
AYNSLEY LISTER and on to BLUES BOY DAN and the latest
sensational band which is storming the country, ROSCO
LEVEE & THE SOUTHERN SLIDE.
SUNDAY is
always the day of surprises and, invariably, many
memorable moments. Last year it was Ian Siegal with the
Mudbloods (unplugged) and the mighty Royal Southern
Brotherhood, who just blew everyone away. This time Ian
Siegal and Jimbo Mathus are capturing people's
imaginations, not to mention THE BOOM BAND with four
(yes, FOUR) guitarists and Paddy Milner on keys. They
will be more than a bit special, especially as the
guitarists are MARCUS BONFANTI (currently filling Alvin
Lee's shoes in Woodstock legends Ten Years After), JON
AMOR, MATT TAYLOR and former England Test cricketer MARK
BUTCHER.
To sum up, if there's one place for UK
blues and rock fans to be this November, this is it. But
don’t delay – get your ticket today!
