This is more a one-man show than a talk. Michael
Gray is the world authority on the work of Bob Dylan. The
author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia (2006 & 2008) and Song &
Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan (2000) - the definitive
studies of Dylan’s 48-year body of work - uses a surprising selection
of great records and rare footage to show how hugely Dylan has been
inspired by the blues and how much of its poetry has been smuggled
inside his own.
The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia earned
outstanding reviews from fans and the establishment alike: it won the CB
Oldman Prize for the year’s outstanding work of research and scholarship
from the International Association of Music Libraries, while e-fanzine
The Dylan Daily declared it “the most important Dylan book, bar none.”
Andrew Motion named Song & Dance Man III as
one of the best three books of 2000 and it is the classic work in its
field. Called ‘endlessly illuminating’ (Rolling Stone) and ‘magnificent’
(Record Collector), it gained 5-star reviews in Q and Uncut. Greil
Marcus admired ‘Gray’s reach, tone and acuity’ and called the book’s
research ‘amazing’; Christopher Ricks called the book ‘wonderfully comic
and serious and sharp’ and ‘monumentally illuminating’. Nine years later
it is still in print.
The books may be immense but there’s nothing dry
about Michael’s talks. He has been a sell-out on American college
campuses and in the UK & Ireland at festivals, theatres and arts
centres. In late 2006 he performed at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in
Cleveland, Ohio, and at the University of Texas at Austin he drew the
largest crowd of any external speaker in the previous two years.
Michael Gray’s events are always lively and
spontaneous, witty and acute, using unpredictable slices of loud music
to offer a thoroughly entertaining, fresh account of Dylan’s
achievement.
Michael launches a new tour of talks,
starting in February 2009 and running through till the end of May 2009.
More dates will be added in the new few weeks but firm dates so far,
